Expert: Drone virus poses ongoing threat

BLOOMINGTON, Ind., Oct. 11 (UPI) -- Reports of a virus infecting computers used by pilots to control armed military drones show even protected systems may not be secure, a U.S. expert says.
Unmanned, remote-controlled aircraft have become an important tool in America's arsenal in regions of the world where the risk of casualties are high, but reports of a virus logging keystrokes of pilots controlling them from Creech Air Force Base in Nevada is a powerful reminder of cyber risks in such systems, Indiana University cybersecurity expert Fred H. Cate said.
"First it is vital to remember that defense systems are just that -- systems -- and they are integrated with many other systems, including the Internet, email, USB and disk storage, contractor networks and the like," he said in an IU release Tuesday.
"As a result no matter how well a system is protected it is impossible to isolate it entirely from the risks borne by other systems with which it interconnects."
While the military has made no public disclosure of any direct harm from the virus, Cate warns that doesn't mean the threat is not serious.
"Second, we must remember that not all cyber risks pose immediate threats," Cate said. "Some of the most pernicious risks may take the form of longer-term threats, like sharing every keystroke of drone attacks."
"The fact that the Air Force has been unable to eradicate the virus and has continued to operate the drones using compromised systems raises important issues."

Facebook iPad Application Finally Launches

After years of waiting, a native Facebook application for the iPad has finally arrived.
While the iPad launched on April 3, 2010, there has not been a Facebook app developed specifically for the slate.
Yesterday, Facebook announced the release of its official iPad app. The app displays photos that you can flip through like a photo album, groups and lists on the left-hand side of the screen, with messages and notifications at the top, according to the San Francisco Chronicle.
“With the iPad app, you get the full Facebook experience, right at your fingertips,” Leon Dubinsky, Facebook mobile engineer, explained on the official Facebook blog.
Facebook for iPad is available for free from the App Store.

Google+ Is Now In The Top Ten Social Networking Sites

Last week the company opened Google+ to the public, and traffic rocketed. Web traffic tracker Experian Hitwise reported this afternoon that Google+ now number 8 in its rankings of top social networking and forums Web sites, and got 15 million U.S. visitors last week, putting it just behind MySpace.
And that doesn't include mobile visitors, or traffic entirely from the black notification bar.
The week before, Google+ was number 54 with 1.1 million visits.
Hang on a second -- number 54? That's actually the most shocking fact of all, given that it was in 42nd place back in July with 1.8 million visits.
So it looks like interest in Google+ really was dropping until Google opened it up.
By way of comparison, number-one Facebook got 1.75 billion visits from U.S. users during the week.
Update: In the category of social networking, Google+ is now #6. Last week, it was #21 -- one notch below where it was back in July.
Here's the full top ten:
